Candace – With our sperm and egg cookies in tow and my new rockin’ milk and cookie socks Chris gave me to impress the doctors while on my surgical stirrup throne, we descended upon our fertility clinic ready for our little blastocysts to be placed into what we hope and pray they will call home for the next 9 months. I was ready. well as ready as I could be. For 3 months prior to this transfer I pumped nothing but fertility goodness into my body. I cut out the hooch, ate like a hippie, and did Zen-like things. Allow me to translate: no alcohol, followed a strict fertility boosting diet, and did meditation, yoga, acupuncture and foot soaking. The stakes are really high! This is our last transfer and we are emotionally and financially (financially is a stretch) barely able to push through. Our last bite at the fertility apple before pursuing adoption. So, 3 months of being a DD and forgoing those Hardees thick burger cravings is not that hard of a challenge given what is on the line.
What is a FET, aka “cryo-cycle” you ask? Wanna take this Chris?
Chris – It’s fairly simple really. Imagine going to the grocery store and purchasing chicken breasts. You can go to the butcher section and get fresh chicken breasts or you can go to the freezer section and get frozen chicken breasts. Either way, they have to be fully thawed before you can season them to a delectable level, sear them in some organic butter, and feast on the resultant deliciousness. Make sense? Butcher fresh chicken = fresh IVF cycle; frozen chicken = FET. Maybe I should stick to an actual explanation. In a FET cycle, embryos that were fertilized in a previous fresh IVF cycle are rapidly defrosted and allowed to hang loose in their petri cradle for a little while. Then, they are transferred to your hopefully, well-accommodating uterus to slumber and grow for the next 9 months or so. For us, we grew everything to blastocyst stage in our previous fresh IVF cycle to give these little guys the greatest chance of survivability. Here are a few pictures of our latest adventures in FET land.
Candace – Chris, did you really just compare our embryos to chicken breasts? {Shaking head}
We modified our shirts to “Think Positiver” for
that extra sprinkle of baby dust.
Just another day in Infertility Land.
These two lucky blasts got transferred.
Say hello to Abbott and Costello.
This could be our first picture as parents.
Heads up to the faithful and brave followers of our journey, you will see some new and exciting changes to the appearance of our blog in the upcoming weeks. Since the end of the Mayan calendar did not result in the end of the world, we thought the blog could use some jazzing up. Hopefully, it will be user friendly and please give us your feedback on it. Stay tuned …
