How to help Hurricane Harvey Victims: Small Charities that do BIG Things

August 31, 2017 -

Today is #ThankfulThursday!

Which is something we try to do every Thursday on our Facebook page. Typically, I’ll post a little ditty about something I am thankful for and then ask everyone else to do the same. Personally, it helps keep an equal balance of perspective: half chaos the other half all unicorn-y and rainbow-y.  Life can get pretty sucky sometimes, but there’s also a hell of a lot to be grateful for those times that don’t suck. I always reflect back to the sentiment that if we all tossed our own steamy-pile of problems into a greater pile with others, after taking one look at other peoples steamy-pile of crappy problems,  you would immediately snatch yours back and run like hell in the opposite direction. In the spirit of #ThankfulThursday, I have whole gambit of things to be thankful for, so , kick back this may take a second.
I am thankful that I did not have to evacuate my home, wondering if it will ever be livable again.

I am thankful I do not have the deep fear of whether my mom, dad, sister, best friend in the next town over is alive or not.

I am thankful that my embryos that are safely frozen at our fertility clinic are not at risk of thawing (and the unknown status of how long the backup generator will last.)

I am pretty damn thankful that I have endless access to a clean pairs of underwear…and deodorant…and soap and other various hygienic-y things.

I am thankful that if Jellybean suddenly becomes ill we have immediate access to a hospital and emergency care.

Reflecting on the recent events in Houston with hurricane Harvey and remembering the devastation that was left from hurricane Katrina, leaves an endless list of things for me, you and all of us to be thankful for. How about this, instead of saying we are thankful for these things, let’s come together in a kumbaya moment and actually show it.

Many people are donating to Red Cross. YASSSSSS, {chants} do it, do it, do it. I also encourage you to think about some of the smaller charities out there that are doing BIG things in times of crisis. So today, skip your coffee run, stay away from Amazon Prime or the black hole of most wallets that is Target, and drop a donation in the hands of an organization that is going to be very thankful you did:

Here are just a few charities to consider:

The Homeless Period Project Ever start your period and not have a tampon? No further explanation is needed here.

Global Giving They are providing emergency supplies, such as food, water, medicine and long-term recovery assistance.

All Hands Volunteers  Ask any non-profit, there is always a need for volunteers. ALWAYS. Emergency responders that are on the ground and provide help where needed

The Animal Defense League of Texas This furbaby-loving band of awesome people help animals who have lost their homes.

The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund They are  accepting relief donations of victims affected by the floods.

Texas Diaper Bank Provides families in times of devastation with diapers, incontinence supplies and other goods to people in need.

Thank you for reminding me to be grateful and for sharing a list of organizations that are helping those in need.
